WIN GIFT CARDS - Student 2 Student will kick off their 4th annual book drive for Wynnton Elementary School in February. Red collections boxes will be placed in all homerooms. The purpose of this red box is for students and teachers to donate gently used

children’s books. On the side of the box is an envelope with entry forms that can be filled out for each book donated. An entry form should be completed and placed inside each book donated. Books will be collected February 3rd - 26th. Drawings for the gift cards will be held in March.


Media Center Volunteers - The orientation for CHS Media Center volunteers which had been scheduled for Tuesday, January 28th, will now be held on Tuesday, February 4th after school.

Prom Committee - The prom committee is meeting on Wednesday Feb 5th after school in Mr. DiQuattro's room.

Wrestling - This past weekend the Columbus High wrestling team travelled to Carrollton to participate in the 4A Area Tournament.  Knowing that this is the part of the season where a loss means the end of your season, the wrestlers came out ready to wrestle.  This was evident during the last round of the tournament where the Blue Devil Matmen won 10 of the 11 matches they wrestled.  At the end of the day, 11 of the 12 wrestlers qualified for the Sectional Tournament this weekend.  Katrell Smith continued his dominance of the 160lb weight class stomping his way to the championship title for the second consecutive week.  Taking 3rd place for the Blue Devils are: Tristan Catterton (152lbs), Michael Toole (182lbs), and William NanaFabu (285lbs).  Justin Bowles surprised the competition with a 4th place finish at 195lbs.  Those who qualified as an alternate are:Elliot Reeder (106), Johnathan Toole (113), Josh McAlister (138), Patrick Barnett (145), Ivan Rome (170), Justin Geter (220).  The wrestlers will travel to Fayette County this weekend for the sectional tournament, where they will try to earn a spot at the almighty State Tournament.  Good luck guys!!!


Social Studies Honors - Trenton Smith, a 9th grader, who won 1st Place in the Political Science category and Best in Show for the High School Division at the MCSD Social Studies Fair this weekend.  His project was on “Stand Your Ground” laws.  He will represent CHS at the Region Social Studies Fair at the end of the month. 


MUSCOGEE MANOR COMMUNITY SERVICE - If you are doing your community service at Muscogee Manor for the spring semester, there is an Orientation Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 6 in Mrs. Shorey’s room #315 from 3:30-3:45 pm. Attendance is mandatory.


National School Counseling Week 2014 - "School Counseling: Building Magical Futures," will be celebrated from Feb. 3-7, 2014, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.

Medical Center Volunteers - If you are interested in volunteering this summer at the Medical Center, please see Mrs. Solomons after school in room 206. Completed applications are due by March 30th.

SUMMER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY! - If you are interested in volunteering at Columbus Regional Health Hospital this summer, please see your grade level counselor for an application. The application deadline is April 1st. You must be between the ages of 14-18 years old.

College Recruiters Scheduled to Visit CHS in the Coming Weeks


Students must sign up in the Guidance Office at least 24 hours before the visit and fill out a pass to be signed by the teacher whose class they will miss.

Speech and Debate Team are Winners - The CHS Speech and Debate Team has started 2014 strong, competing back-to-back weekends since returning for the spring semester.           

            January 9-10, the team traveled to Grady High School in Atlanta for the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Invitational.  Eighteen students represented CHS and took home the following honors:

            Policy Debate: In their first tournament, Ekta Parab and Arnav Patel placed 4th out of 13 teams in Novice Policy.  Arnav was named 5th place speaker. Thomas Hines and Varad Dabke won 2nd place JV Policy Debate.  Thomas was 5th place speaker and Varad was 1st place Speaker.

            Public Forum: Yannik Marazia and Jazmine Buckley won 2nd place in Novice Public Forum.  Sam Cargill and Caroline Sayers (3rd place speaker) were Semi-Finalists.  Also representing CHS in Novice PF were Sharvil Patel and Aamir Punjani.

            In Varsity PF, Joy Holden and Drew Young advanced to the Semi-Final round.  Drew earned 2nd place speaker honors.  Matt Marsh and Tanner Goldsmith also competed in Varsity PF.

            Speech: Katie Nelson and Sarah Read won 4th place in a very competitive field of Duo Interpretations.  Sarah, Ana Mejia, and Rachael McConnell also competed in Dramatic Interpretation, with Rachael advancing to semi-finals.

            We barely had an opportunity to recover from Grady before we were on the road again, traveling January 18 to Jackson, Georgia.  Once again, Columbus received high honors, with twenty-three students representing our school in five different events.

            Policy Debate: In Novice Policy, Dillon Evans and Donald Williams won first place, with Dillon earning recognition as 2nd place speaker.  Ekta Parab and Arnav Patel also competed, with Ekta winning 1st place Novice speaker. Thomas Hines and Varad Dabke won 2nd place in Varsity Policy.  Varad was named 3rd place speaker.

            Public Forum: At the novice level, both of our teams won high honors.  Aamir Punjani and Sharvil Patel won 4th place, and Caroline Sayers and Sam Cargill earned 2nd place in the novice division.  Aamir won 7th place speaker, Sam was named 3rd place speaker, and Caroline was the 2nd place speaker.

            In Varsity PF, Drew Young and Jacob Harvey advanced to the semi-final round.  Drew was named 4th place speaker.  Matt Marsh and Tanner Goldsmith won second place in the varsity division, earning them a bid to the state championship in March.  Also competing were Kyle Canady and Jazmine Buckley

            Speech: Jinny Van Doorn won 5th place and a bid to the state championship in Impromptu Speaking. Our entries in Duo Interpretation swept the awards, with Katie Nelson & Sarah Read earning 1st place, and Emily Harvey & Hannah Rauhut winning 2nd place.

Sarah Read, Taylor Blackwell, and Rachael McConnell competed in Dramatic Interpretation. Rachael, in only her second tournament, won 2nd place! The combined efforts of these talented students earned Columbus High the 2nd place Sweepstakes award for overall wins!  The team now begins preparation for the novice/JV state tournament in February.

            Please take the opportunity to congratulate these students on their incredible achievements when you see them.  Thanks to Ms. Doran, our parent volunteers, and our school faculty and staff for supporting CHS Speech and Debate!


Journalism Conference - Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference for Juniors

This all expenses paid journalism conference promotes the role of the First Amendment as a cornerstone of democracy and inspires students to pursue journalism careers.   This will be an incredible life changing opportunity for 51 high school juniors from across the United States.


To qualify as an applicant for this program:


You must be a high school junior who will graduate in the Class of 2015.

You must be committed to pursuing a career in journalism.

You must demonstrate qualities of a “free spirit.”

You must be available to attend the conference June 21-26, 2014, in Washington D.C.

Endevvr Summer Program at Georgia Tech - Endevvr helps high school students start, run, and fund real companies.  Taught by Ivy League professors and top-tier management consultants, the program is highly rated; last year’s alumni considered it to be “the best, most transformational experience of their life.”  The six week program will be held in the Summer 2014 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. Duke Summer Academy - Duke University proudly begins accepting applications December 2nd, for two exciting academic programs for high school students during the summer of 2014! Duke’s four-week Summer College for High School Students program takes place June 28 – July 25 and is designed to enhance your students’ readiness for future admission to an undergraduate degree program at a selective and prestigious university or college. Math Team - The Math Team meets every Thursday in room 133 at 3:30.


Recycling Bins- Only paper and cardboard should be placed in the blue bins -no drink bottles, food items, garbage, clothing, etc.

Old Yearbooks - You may purchase yearbooks from the last four years at a price of $40.  If you are interested, see Coach Perry in room 310.  Make checks payable to "Columbus High School."


Academic Decathlon - All meetings for Academic Decathlon are now Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 in the Media Center Reference Room.


Chess Club – The CHS Chess Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 in the Media Center and Media Center Classroom.  All students are welcome.


FCA - The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be held every Friday in the gym at 8:00 - breakfast will be served.


Cherry Berry - Cherry Berry will be on campus during lunch hours every 1st Friday of the month.


Library Hours - The CHS Media Center opens at 8:10 (when the bell rings) each morning.

We are closed after school on the first Monday of each month. We are open Tuesday – Friday until 4:30 (unless we have something unusual like a district wide meeting to attend—in these cases we place a sign on our front door announcing that we will not be open that afternoon).


Guidance - Any Senior planning to attend the University of Virginia should see Mrs. Strunk regarding a scholarship program that requires a nomination.  Students should have stellar grades and SAT/ACT scores, as well as an outstanding resume of community/school service.


Dream Trip - The Alps, beautiful countryside, Rhine River cruise, cathedrals, castles, holocaust, great food.  What do all of these things have in common?  They are on the itinerary for the June 2014 Dream Trip to Austria, Switzerland, and Germany.  If you are interested in going on this trip please see either Mrs. Zachry or Mrs. Highnote for more information.

The Fountain City Slam is embarking on yet another fun-filled and enriching year of self-expression. Fountain City Slam Youth Open Mic - Beginning September 11th, Local youth talent (ages 13 – 19) are invited to come out and express themselves! Whether you’re a poet, singer, comedian, or rapper, we welcome all talent to the mic. Sign-up starts at 6 PM. There are only 15 performance slots. Material must be 5 minutes or less. Every 2nd Wednesday @ 6:30 PM

Fountain City Slam Youth Poetry Slam Competition - This event is open to area youth (ages 13 – 19). A poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience. Those interested in slamming should come prepared with at least 2 original poems, no longer than 3 minutes in length. Sign-up starts at 6 PM.  The first 10 slammers to sign up will be allowed to compete. The top 3 from each preliminary slam will advance to the finals to be held in March. The top finishers from the finals will represent the city at Brave New Voices in Philadelphia in July 2014. Every 4th Wednesday @ 6:30 PM.
